It’s always tough when any high school sports season comes to an end. Unfortunately when it comes to the IHSAA state tournament, only one team can remain standing once the playoffs come to an end. The varsity boys soccer team drew a very tough and talented Chesterton Trojan team who was ranked No. 3 in the state soccer poll for its first round sectional opponent. The team put in a valiant effort throughout the entire match on Tuesday night at Crown Point High School, but ultimately came up short in a season ending loss 7-3.
Chesterton came out in the first half and dictated control of possession and the offensive chances. They were able to score their first goal within the first five minutes of the contest and never looked back. They would score two more goals in the half and led 3-0 at the break. The Kougars would have a few serious scoring opportunities. A Ben Herz shot from distance was pushed over the bar by the Chesterton keeper. The Kougars also had a few free kick chances that were thwarted away by the Trojan defense.
The Kougars displayed more fight and grit in the second half, but Chesterton would continue to add to its scoring total. Two of their four second half goals would come off of penalty kick opportunities. Down 7-0 midway through the second half, the Kougars continued to fight and never gave up. In the last 15 minutes, senior Julian Colon had a senior moment he will never forget. The midfielder scored three beautiful goals with two of them coming in the last five minutes of the game. If only the game could have went on longer, it’s possible Colon might have added to his scoring total. With his hat trick, Colon would end his senior season scoring five goals and adding six assists.
Senior goalkeeper Hayden Myers finished his high school soccer career making 11 saves on the night. Seniors Aiden Thompson, Alex Lain, Colin Wheeler, Ty Niewoehner, Devin Mount, and Andrew Tobias also gave a commendable effort in their last game wearing the red and white. All the seniors should be proud of their soccer accomplishments this season. They left everything they had left on the field today and will be dearly missed next season.
KV finishes with a 7-6-3 overall record and will look to build off of this year’s accomplishments when the season resumes next fall. Thank you to all the KV parents and supporters of the boys soccer team this season! And as always Go Kougars!
