The boys varsity soccer team traveled to conference foe Munster on Wednesday night where it played its last regular season game of the 2020 season. The Kougars fought valiantly the entire match, but were unable to keep pace with a very strong Mustang team in a 4-1 defeat.
It was Munster’s senior night where they honored their 14 senior players. The Mustangs controlled much of the possession and offensive chances in the first half, but the Kougar defense displaying a 5-4-1 formation made it difficult for Munster to break through initially. Senior keeper Hayden Myers would made some great stops early as well as the Kougar defense, but an incredible strike by Munster’s Max Maric from 30 yards out gave the hosts the early 1-0 lead. The Mustangs would double their lead not long after when Afam Oniah would score off a corner kick giving Munster the 2-0 cushion. The Kougars had a few very dangerous scoring chances by Joel Gomez and Julian Colon, only to be denied by the Munster goalkeeper and the crossbar.
The score would stay 2-0 into the second half when the Mustangs would add two more tallies to their goal total giving the hosts a 4-0 lead. Hayden Myers had to unfortunately come out of the game midway through the second half with a head injury. Junior keeper Michael VanWijk would replace Myers for the remainder of the match. The Kougars would break into the scoring column in the latter stages of the half when a through-ball over the top of the Mustang defense by Chris Varela Carerra found a streaking Andrew Tobias. The senior midfielder out-ran the Mustang back line and calmly placed his shot in the lower left corner to score his second goal of the season. The Kougars would almost get one more goal moments later when Chris Varela Carerra’s shot went off the goalpost.
Even in defeat, the Kougars showed their fighting spirit the entire night. Against a very good Munster team, KV never gave up and gave Munster one of their toughest tests in recent years. The entire team gave a commendable effort and should be proud of their performance.
Hayden Myers finished with 13 saves on the night. Michael Van Wijk also added four saves for KV.
With the loss, the Kougar overall record now stands at 7-5-3 and they finish tied for third in the NCC conference with a 2-3 mark. KV will have another tough test as they start postseason play next Tuesday when they travel to Crown Point High School to take on No. 4 state ranked Chesterton in the first round of Sectionals. Game time is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
