On Friday January 31st the Boys Varsity Basketball Team traveled to Highland to face the Trojans in a Northwest Crossroads Conference game. Missed opportunities at the free thrown line in the first half, and on inside shots in the second half, eventually determined KV’s fate in a 49-46 loss to Highland.
The Kougars got off to a slow start and trailed Highland 17-9 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the tide turned in KV’s favor as the Kougars outscored Highland 18-8 in to take a 27-25 lead into halftime. Gavin Herrema led the charge by scoring 15 points in the second quarter. KV maintained that two point lead (36-34) going into the fourth quarter. Highland then went on a little run to start the fourth quarter and held off the Kougars at the end 49-46. KV’s Riley Jordan had a good look at a three pointer that would have tied the game at the buzzer but it just rimmed out.
Gavin Herrema led KV in scoring with 21 points and Nick Mikash added 14. The Kougars are back in action on Saturday February 1st against Portage with the JV game starting at 5:30 pm. This will be the first of three straight home games for KV.
