The boys’ cross country team took second place out of nine teams at Lafayette McCutcheon’s Maverick Stampede on Saturday, August 26, 2017. The host Mavericks posted a perfect 15 points to KV’s 51 and Harrison’s 69.
Sophomore Dean Schmidt led the Kougars, edging recovering teammate Trevor Conley, in 17:54 for sixth place in a field of 63 runners.
“All of our veteran guys showed improved performances over last year,” explained Coach Tim Adams. “Dean cut off 2:43 over last year, Trevor — even though recovering — was at the same pace.”
Perfect weather and course conditions made for good running for the rest of KV, account for 30 to 40 seconds improvement in Adams’ calculations. “This course perennially produces our slowest time on any course, and last year, standing water and slippery trails and hills made it the worst, but adjusting for that, I see signs of significant progress.”
Other performances in the varsity race:
Cameron Edwards, 11th place in 18:31.7 (1:03 improvement);
Cameron Sheehy, 13th place in 18:39.8 (3:49 improvement);

Ryder Smith, 31st place in 19:51.9 (1:25 improvement).
