Girls Middle School Cross Country, Girls Varsity Cross Country · Girls’ Cross Country Sets Many New Personal Records and Season Bests at Harrison Invite

Yesterday, at the Lafayette Amphitheatre, the young Lady Kougar Cross Country team made big strides (pun intended) toward making noise at the end of the season, with three personal records (PRs) and two season-bests (SBs) of the five who ran.  The Harrison Invite, featuring many ranked teams from all over the state, is a field comparable to a semi-state, if not even a tad tougher than that. Sophomore sensation Sam Martin, recently named one of her school’s Athletes of the Week, continues to excel, placing 64th out of 170 runners in the varsity race in a SB time of 20:35.8.  Martin keeps getting stronger and faster each meet, as she leads her young charges this season. Freshman Lexi Culbreth and sophomore Abby Robinson, who is coming back from a balky knee, wisely worked together this race and both did very well. Culbreth finished strong in a PR time, by 12 seconds, of 23:19.1, placing 131st. Robinson, who ran a gutsy SB time of 23:23.8, placed 133rd. Coaches Tim  Adams and Lane Lewallen decided to run freshmen Sami Sullivan and Gracie Edwards in the Junior Varsity (JV) race, and that worked out well for the two spunky runners. Sullivan, who earned a JV ribbon last week at the Maverick Stampede, placed 85th out of 200 JV runners, shattering her old PR with an excellent time of 24:11.0, as she closes in on the sub 24 minute mark. This was roughly 2 minutes and 16 seconds faster than her previous PR.  Edwards, also gaining a lot of confidence, knocked a REMARKABLE SIX plus minutes off her previous PR, running a time of 29:08.0 to place 185th, two very strong runs in the JV race.  Senior Haley Hixson and junior letter winner Hazel Veldman rested their injuries at Harrison, and helped out by timing and encouraging their teammates.  Kankakee Valley looks to have all seven runners ready to go at the varsity level, and to field a full team, next week at Lowell in the Bob Thomas Invitational.

Boys Middle School Cross Country, Boys Varsity Cross Country · Personal bests abound for boys’ cross country at Harrison

Kankakee Valley boys’ cross country team finished 13 out of 25 teams at the large-field Lafayette Harrison invite on Saturday, September 2, 2017.  En route, 9 of 12 boys set new personal bests, or “personal records” for the 5k distance.

Dean Schmidt took KV’s top spot, finishing at 43 out of 169 in 17:03.4, a PR of 16 seconds.  Trevor Conley continues to show patience during recovery, pacing off another 28 seconds of improvement on the season (17:27).

“This is a typical, mid-pack finish for us,” explained Coach Tim Adams, “but it does mark the first time in a decade or more that we have fielded five runners under 18:00.

“The Harrison Invite typically sees a high-water mark for us in the first half of the season; veteran runners who start the season with a base will typically see another 15 to 20 second drop just from another month’s conditioning.  I want to see if we can squeeze out an additional 10 seconds or more just from mental toughness and resolve.”

Other scorers

Cameron Edwards, senior, 17:36.9 — 7 second PR

Cameron Sheehy, junior, 17:49.9 — 27 second PR

Micah Adams, sophomore, 17:55.7 — 18 second PR

Other finishers:

Ryder Smith, junior, 19:22.1 — 16 second season best

Chris Cooley, senior, 20:03 — 34 second PR

Trenten Thomas, sophomore, 20:53.4

Zackary Meadows, sophomore, 20:53.4 — 1:33 PR

Alden Cates, freshman, 22:09.1 — first 5k

Sam Evans, sophomore, 23:26.3 — 7 second PR

Mike Denvit, freshman, 23:33.0 — 1:22 PR

KV runs next Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Lowell’s Bob Thomas Invitational.

Game Recap

The Kankakee Valley (KV) Lady Kougar soccer team tied Merrillville. Merrillville’s Reannah Soto was able to score first in the 38th minute. In the 2nd minute of the second half KV’s Karmen Nowak found the back of the net off a beautiful long free kick that floated just out of the reach of the Merrillville’s goal keeper. In controversy, KV’s Nowak and Carley Riffett paired up on another free kick ending with Riffett heading the ball into the back of the net, only to have it called off for a foul.

KV’s Keeper, Jenna James, had 11 saves for the night.
