Kougars News · Lady Kougar Cross Country Places 3rd at Sectional to Advance to Regional; Bell-2nd, Campbell-13th and Frieden-14th, Earn Individual Ribbons

The Lady Kougar Cross Country (KV) team placed a projected 3rd at the Rensselaer (RCHS)  Sectional for the fourth straight year to advance to their 12th team regional in 14 years. In the team race, two outstanding teams , RCHS and Morgan Township (MT), battled it out, the host Bombers winning another title 37-39. KV edged a strong Kouts team by the slimmest of margins, 84-85, and North Judson was the other qualifying team. Top 5 teams and top 10 individuals from non-qualifying teams advance to regional and the same format is in place from regional to semi-state.

Freshman Emma Bell had another terrific race, as she continues to show she is among the area’s elite runners. Following individual winner Amzie Maienbrook from RCHS (19:42.9), Bell finished in a very strong 2nd place to earn the runner-up ribbon and All-Sectional honors. (top 20.) Her time was 20:12.3, an excellent time on the windy day!

Bell’s classmate and buddy Audrey Campbell, and senior leader Halle Frieden joined her on the All-Sectional team with VERY important 13th and 14th gutsy places! KV does not finish 3rd without these two placing where they did. Campbell ran 22:14.7 and Frieden finished in 22:24.4. Campbell then hustled over to play in the soccer sectional championship game, along with Bell. Campbell is a starting varsity forward in soccer, having TWO sectional championship events in one day is a very rare feat!

Lone junior veteran Em Wilson was 27th in 24:24.6 with Liv Sheehy-31st in 24:55.5, had either one been a place lower, KV would have slipped to 4th as a team.

With Tay Anderson and Jade McDonald out with injuries, KV ran  just 6 runners at sectional, with sophomore Joselyn Staples having a very strong run, placing 36th in 25:59.1!

Head Coach Lane Lewallen: ” It was an interesting day, we placed where we were projected, yet most of my girls were not happy with how they ran, and I respect that. It’s a good reminder that ALL the little things during the week , including on  meet day,  add up to the meet going well  on Saturdays. We still got out (to regional), we weren’t going to place any higher than 3rd, and we all, if healthy, have at least one more meet to run another great race. It’s been an excellent season, and we are glad it continues.” Both KV cross country teams, (boys’ were a very strong 2nd at sectional), run at the Chesterton Regional this Saturday.
