Kankakee Valley High School boys’ cross country team placed 2nd out of a field of eight complete teams at the Rensselaer Central Sectional race on Saturday, October 10, 2020. Morgan Township won with 33 points; KV scored 75 points over Rensselaer’s 90. Morgan Township and KV have taken the top two team spots over the last ten years, with the series tied at 5-5.
Justin Hoffman, in just his third outing of the year, lead KV. Hoffman positioned himself with the leaders early, finishing third overall in 17:33.88 on an open and windy course. “Justin ran well today,” stated Coach Adams. “His fitness is returning, but the route there is not a linear one. He had his toughest week of practice yet, preparing for the future, but that took a little out of his legs.”
Sophomore Luke Bristol found his legs early in the race and finished tenth in a PR 18:18.30. “Luke likes to play the vulture. It’s better to be the vulture than the road kill, referring to those who go out too fast and then die. Luke found today that he can go out faster and still feast.”
Ethan Ehrhardt placed twelfth in 18:25;
Xavier De La Paz Marino, 24th in 19:32;
Adam Collard, 26th, in 19:36;
Alden Cates, 42nd in 20:51;
Brock Maple, 48th in 21:21.
“The wind and temperatures were not as favorable as last Saturday, so times for most of us were slower than we had hoped, but we still came to compete. When I remember where we started the year, second place in sectional was far from a reality. I am proud of the work ethic and attitude of these boys.”
KV moves on to regional competition next Saturday at Sunset Hills County Park.
