On Saturday, the Lady Kougar (KV) Cross Country team ran very well on their home course in the NCC championship meet, designed by Boys’ Head Coach Tim Adams. ALL competed well, with the end result a higher than projected, 4th place team finish in this highly competitive meet with 89 points, in a meet featuring some of the state’s bests from both genders!
Freshman Emma Bell continued her stellar season, taking runner-up honors in a terrific time of 20:03.97! This 2nd place earns Bell All-NCC 1st Team honors, a phenomenal achievement for a freshman, and KV’s best NCC finish since Cat Cavinder also placed 2nd in 2016 on her home course.
The trio of Bell’s buddy and classmate Audrey Campbell, and veterans Halle Frieden (her team’s lone senior running in her final NCC meet), and junior Em Wilson had VERY important places of 16th, 19th and 20th, all earning All-NCC Honorable Mention honors! Campbell ran the best race by far of her season, when it mattered the most, sprinting to a gigantic personal record (PR) on the interesting and challenging course. Her time was 21:51.72, a PR BY OVER A MINUTE!! Frieden gutted out another All-NCC honor in 22:16.56, with Wilson duplicating her place in 2019 in 22:18.66, a strong season-best for Wilson!
Hard-working Liv Sheehy, in many ways the heart and soul of her team, improved her mile position by a lot, eventually placing 32nd, in 24:08.59, as the all important 5th scorer on her team.
Tay Anderson, battling a balky shin, ran tough to place 36th in 25:09.72, with Jade McDonald running a terrific PR time of 25:45.03, good for 39th, her second straight PR run! KV finishes a very solid 34-34 on the 2020 regular season, including the Tim Adams Invite championship versus VERY stiff competition, their best record since 2016. As a group, they are 747-612 in the past 14 years with much team and individual success in conference, invites and post-season meets!
In the reserve race, Joselyn Staples was FANTASTIC! She placed 12th in a HUGE PR time of 25:18.06, a PR by some 1:43, blazing through her last two miles!! Juliet Starr kept up a good pace, finishing 19th in 27:44.52. Lily Rowe and Sami Kristoff finished strong in 23rd and 24th place, with times of 28:57.18 and 29:33.53. Rowe’s time was a PR run she should be very proud of. Go Kougs!!
Head Coach Lane Lewallen: ” Another phenomenal meet! As Tim’s (Coach Adams) training kicks in, we run our best at the end of the season, when it matters most, I’m very much looking forward to sectional and beyond. These tough invites and this awesome NCC meet is great preparation for the post-season, and we are ready to go! From Emma to Sami, all my girls ran strong and really competed well, with Audrey and Joselyn running HUGE PRs!! Great job, ladies, keep it going!”
