Kankakee Valley High School boys’ cross country team competed in the high-caliber field of the Harrison Invitational on Saturday, September 7, 2019. Despite their typical mid-pack finish (14th place out of 26 teams), the harriers produced KV’s best efforts in many years at this meet.
“This field includes many top-tier teams, those who run deep into the post season,” states Coach Adams, “including four teams from last year’s state finals and several ranked teams. Still, this was our single best effort as a team in many years. Our combined varsity time bodes well for the post season.
“Twelve out of sixteen boys posted personal records, including three seniors. Two more recorded season bests. For the first time in at least thirteen years, three KV runners broke 17:00. And our number four and five runners had huge days.”
Senior Ethan Tillema led the KV charge with a PR 16:57. Sophomore Justin Hoffman and senior Micah Adams stormed in close behind in 16:58 (PR of 25 seconds) and 16:59 (PR of 18 seconds). Senior Trent Thomas continued to cut his time, crossing the finish line in 18:10 for a huge 39 second PR followed shortly by Adam Collard, sophomore, in 18:21 (PR of 38 seconds).
“We had 3:48 of improvement toward PRs just by the top 7 boys today, and 11:06 of improvement over last year’s race effort among 11 boys, an average of 1:34. In a race that takes between 17 and 22 minutes, that’s significant.”
