The JV Boys had two goals in mind when they went to Hobart to play in the Hobart JV Christmas Classic. 1) they wanted to get better as a team, by giving a full team effort, playing as a team, and 2) win the tourney. After a thrilling 40-39 victory over the host Brickies, in the championship game, they proudly could proclaimed they had accomplished their mission. Coach Yergler was very pleased with the team effort, team work, team spirit and team energy the boys showed in both games of the tourney. “When they come ready and focused to play, and a willingness to defend people they’re a pretty good team and those things will give them a chance to win a lot of games”, said Coach Yergler. The Kougars continued their strong defense from the first game as they held the Brickies scoreless in the first quarter on their way to a 6-0. The first quarter proved to be the difference in this championship game as the Brickies out scored the Kougars by 5 over the next 3 quarters, but it was enough as the Kougars determination and will to win bent, but it never broke and the Kougars scored with 30 seconds on the clock to take a 40-39 lead and then played very solid defense the last 30 seconds to seal the victory. Nick Mikash lead the Kougars in scoring with 15 pts, but Cole Cavinder set the tone the whole game with his all out hustle and effort on both ends of the floor. The Championship victory gave the Kougars a 6-4 record to end the first half of their season, and send them to Munster, eager and hungry to face the Mustangs in their second conference game of the season. Follow the Kougars to Munster on Saturday January 5th to face the Mustangs in a 5:30 tip-off.
