Kougars News · Cavinder Earns All-State Honors at State Track Meet, 7th Place Medal, Shatters Own School-Record!

On Friday night at the 2018 Indiana State Track and Field Meet, Kankakee Valley (KV) superstar Cat Cavinder ran the race of her life when it counted the most! Seeded 10th in Heat 2, the fast heat, she ran a terrific race, mentally and physically. She ran her first 400 in a swift time of sub 66.0, maintaining contact the entire time with the lead pack. Her second 400 was an even more impressive 68.0+ as she sprinted home in a blistering time of 2:14.07, setting a new school-record in the process. She ran the previous record at the regional May 22nd in 2:16.65, meaning she cut off roughly 2 1/2 minutes at the state meet! She also earned the 7th place medal and All-State honors! Cavinder becomes KV’s first distance runner to score at the state meet since Kristin Fritts placed 4th in the 2008 1600. She also is KV’s third 800 state qualifier in four years  joining Brittany Kent in 2015 and Cavinder herself made it to state in 2016. Most recently led by Jenna Jungels’s , (graduated in 2016),  remarkable TEN indoor and outdoor All-State placings, KV has had a long line of state qualifiers/placers through the decades, and the junior Cavinder etches her name onto that prestigious list with happily one more season to compete at KV. Head Coach Lane Lewallen: ” What an AMAZING night! Cat was phenomenal, she just ran an awesome race! I could not be more proud of her! I want to thank her for all her exceptional efforts and also want to thank her parents: Clinton and Rachael, and her brother Cole, for driving me down to the state meet, helping us weather the rain delay and making it such a great night. Huge thanks too to our Athletic Director John Gray, Varsity Assistant Softball Coach Tom Niemic, my daughter Lorrie Ann and Ariel, for making the long trip to Indiana University to cheer Cat on. It meant a LOT!” There was more exciting All-State news recently for the Lady Kougar track and field team as senior Nicole (“Cole”) Nannenga was officially named an Indiana Coaches of Girls’ Sports Association (ICGSA) Academic All-State Honorable Mention (HM) selection. N. Nannenga was a regional qualifier in the 4×100 in 2018, was selected a team captain and was also Academic All-Conference. She joins a long list of ICGSA Academic All-Staters from KV, most recently 1st Teamers Emma Fase and Abby Klemp, and HM choice, all-around star athlete, Rae Walther in 2017. Lewallen added: “This is a very prestigious honor for Cole! The standards to make Academic All-State are very high and like Cat, she is a terrific young lady! Congratulations, Cole on this great honor. Go Kougars!”
