The female athlete of the week for 4/9 thru 4/14 is Girls’ Track and Field junior, and four sport athlete Cat Cavinder. In her first outdoor meet in nearly two years, Cat dominated her best race the 800, in a phenomenal time of 2:21.6. Which was way faster than she ran in this meet two years ago, and not far off her own school record in the very first outdoor meet of the year! This time will be among the area’s top times and likely among the state’s bests . This spring she is not only leading her seven time defending sectional champions track and field team, but is also playing varsity softball for our awesome two times state runner-up powerhouse squad. Congratulations, Cat!!
Senior Gavin Tillema of the boys’ track and field led the team in scoring in the Kougar’s season opener against Munster. Tillema, who has competed in 7 of the 16 events in track and field over his high school career, captured first place against the Mustangs in the 110 meter high hurdles (18.9), an event that has been a constant in his meet assignment over the last four years. In addition, this season he picked up the shot put again for the first time since middle school, putting the 12 pounds 43′ 2.25″ into the ring, nearly three feet ahead of the closest competitor and three feet better than his previous best. Congratulations Gavin.
