Yesterday, at the Lafayette Amphitheatre, the young Lady Kougar Cross Country team made big strides (pun intended) toward making noise at the end of the season, with three personal records (PRs) and two season-bests (SBs) of the five who ran. The Harrison Invite, featuring many ranked teams from all over the state, is a field comparable to a semi-state, if not even a tad tougher than that. Sophomore sensation Sam Martin, recently named one of her school’s Athletes of the Week, continues to excel, placing 64th out of 170 runners in the varsity race in a SB time of 20:35.8. Martin keeps getting stronger and faster each meet, as she leads her young charges this season. Freshman Lexi Culbreth and sophomore Abby Robinson, who is coming back from a balky knee, wisely worked together this race and both did very well. Culbreth finished strong in a PR time, by 12 seconds, of 23:19.1, placing 131st. Robinson, who ran a gutsy SB time of 23:23.8, placed 133rd. Coaches Tim Adams and Lane Lewallen decided to run freshmen Sami Sullivan and Gracie Edwards in the Junior Varsity (JV) race, and that worked out well for the two spunky runners. Sullivan, who earned a JV ribbon last week at the Maverick Stampede, placed 85th out of 200 JV runners, shattering her old PR with an excellent time of 24:11.0, as she closes in on the sub 24 minute mark. This was roughly 2 minutes and 16 seconds faster than her previous PR. Edwards, also gaining a lot of confidence, knocked a REMARKABLE SIX plus minutes off her previous PR, running a time of 29:08.0 to place 185th, two very strong runs in the JV race. Senior Haley Hixson and junior letter winner Hazel Veldman rested their injuries at Harrison, and helped out by timing and encouraging their teammates. Kankakee Valley looks to have all seven runners ready to go at the varsity level, and to field a full team, next week at Lowell in the Bob Thomas Invitational.
