Last night on a very hot and humid evening, the Kankakee Valley High School Girls’ team kicked off its 2017 cross country season at their Hokum Karem. Sophomore Sam Martin, fresh off a terrific freshman season, and her partner, freshman Lexi Culbreth had an excellent meet, placing 13th overall in the very competitive field in a combined time of 42:10, for the ten kilometer race. Martin, an All-Northwest Crossroads Conference Second Team choice in 2016, and a semi-state qualifier, had a blistering first one kilometer time of 3:49. She also had an awesome Rotary Ramble five kilometer on Saturday, placing first in her age division with an excellent early season time of 21:36.0. Culbreth ran tough all night with her fastest time being a 4:02 one kilometer. Junior letter winner Hazel Veldman, senior Haley Hixson, and freshmen Sami Sullivan and Gracie Edwards also ran strong, while sophomore letter winner Abby Robinson, nineteenth at sectional last year, for the reigning sectional champions, rested her knee and helped with meet management. All seven runners look to open the regular season in fine fashion, this Saturday, at Hebron in the Dave Walker Invite.
