Girls Middle School Cross Country, Girls Varsity Cross Country · Cavinder Competes in State Cross Country Meet

Yesterday, on an unseasonably hot and windy day,  KVHS sophomore Cat Cavinder became her school’s first individual female runner since Kristin Fritts in 2007, to qualify for the state cross country meet, held at LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course, aka Cross Country Town USA, in Terre Haute.  (KV’s girls’ team qualified in 2008.) Cavinder finished 166th in a time of 21:21.2, capping off a remarkable season for her and her team.  In just her first year of varsity high school cross, Cavinder led her squad to an 80-33 overall regular season record, (KV had 13 wins total, the previous two seasons), and an area #8 ranking.  KV was 2nd at the Dave Walker Invite, 3rd at the NCC meet and the New Prairie Invite, 4th at the Culver Invite and 6th at Bob Thomas, all terrific team finishes.  They ran even better in the post-season, with Cavinder taking the individual first place at sectional, and with Allie Tokarz-5th, Julianna Colon-7th, Sam Martin-8th and Abby Robinson-19th, KV won their first girls’ sectional title since 2013 with 40 points.  They placed a very strong 6th at regional with 132 points, with Cavinder-7th, Martin 23rd, Colon-27th and Tokakrz-28th, all becoming KV’s 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th semi-state individual qualifiers in the past 10 years!  Cavinder then blasted home 9th at semi-state with a phenomenal school-record time of 18:57.9, to qualify for the state meet.  Head Coach Lane Lewallen commented:” What a terrific bounce back season for our girls. Head Boys’ Coach (Tim) Adams and I are very proud of their efforts.  You know it has been a great season when it flies by and I do not want it to end, both of which are the case with the 2016 cross country season.  Congrats to Cat for getting to state, and to all the rest of my girls for such an outstanding season!”
