Today at the New Prairie Regional, KV’s Lady Kougar Cross Country Team had many fine runs to place 6th as a team with 132 points, just missing a semi-state team berth to an outstanding 5th place Rensselaer team, who they had edged the week before for the sectional title, 40-46. RCHS had 130 points, and both teams competed very well. In an individual sport, if your team does not advance, the next best thing is to advance as individuals, and KV did that, and then some. Sophomore Cat Cavinder continues to impress, grabbing the 7th place ribbon in an excellent time of 19:24.7, 5 seconds faster than when she won the individual sectional title last week, and some 21 seconds faster than she ran at the New Prairie Invite a month ago! Cavinder was the first individual to advance to the New Prairie Semi-State next Saturday. She will not be alone, as she will be joined by teammates fr. Sam Martin, sr. Julianna Colon and sr. Allie Tokarz. Martin blasted home 23rd in a huge personal record (PR) time of 20:21.7, a PR of some 34 seconds for Martin! Colon, who also doubled as a soccer star this Fall, was tremendous as well, placing 27th in a very swift PR, by roughly 20 seconds, of 20:32.5. Right behind was Tokarz in 28th place, with a near PR time of 20:33.5, on the challenging course, vs. excellent competition, the first 4 teams were Valpo, Portage, LaPorte and Chesterton. Tokarz’s time was roughly 1 1/2 minutes faster than the New Prairie Invite!! Cavinder, Martin, Colon and Tokarz become the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th Lady Kougars to advance to semi-state as individuals in the 10 years Coaches Tim Adams and Lane Lewallen have been together. They include: Kristin Fritts, who also made the state meet that year as an individual-2007; BreAnne Chevrette, Felicia Sytsma, Michelle Kent, Allison Rockley, Brittany Stepp, and Brittany Kent. Congratulations also to North Newton’s Ivy Allen for making her second straight semi-state, and Jacob Kessler, who was the #1 individual male. Rounding out the scoring for KV was fr. Abby Robinson, who ran another strong race, placing 59th in a fine time of 22:26.1, 26 seconds faster than at the New Prairie Invite. Robinson’s strong runs at the #5 spot have been vital to KV’s strong season. Right behind in 60th place was soph. Hazel Veldman, who ran another gigantic PR time of 22:35.2, Veldman’s THIRD straight PR run! 2015 MVP jr. Crystal Benitez was 75th in 23:41.1, to complete KV’s 7 runners today. Head Coach Lewallen: “We had three PR’s, two near PR’s, ran terrific, and had FOUR individual semi-state qualifiers, the week after winning the team sectional championship. A coach can not ask anymore of his team than that. I am VERY pleased with ALL our performances here at regional and now on to semi-state for Cat, Sam, Juju and Allie!” .
