Tonight on a beautiful warm evening, the Lady Kougar Track and Field Team performed brilliantly against the best in the area at the Chesterton Regional, which included many of the state’s bests, and  proved they belong among the top teams in the area.  Placing 4th with 46 points, this was KV’s best team finish at regional in many, many years. 29 teams scored at the star-studded meet, won again by Lake Central with 78 points. Crown Point was 2nd with 55, Laporte-3rd with 48, KV-4th with 46, Gary West Side-5th with 39, Munster-6th with 37.5, Valpo-7th with 32, Portage-8th with 30.5, Bowman Academy was 9th with 28, and Merrillville and Bishop Noll tied for 10th with 27 points.  Sr. superstar Jenna Jungels was sensational again, now having qualified for a remarkable 22 events at indoor and outdoor state meets, and is an 8x All-State selection!  Jungels dominated the long jump again, winning with a leap of 18′- 1/2″, and then ran her best hurdle races of the season.  Seeded 8th, she ran a season-best (SB) time of 15.20 to take 2nd in the 100 hurdles, and blasted home 2nd in the 300 hurdles, (seeded 4th), also in a SB time of 46.22, finishing very strong in both races to earn more state meet berths! After the 300’s, she cheered on her freshman teammate Cat Cavinder, who ran another terrific 800 race.  With the speed of a sprinter, the endurance of a distance runner, and all the guts in the world, Cavinder used all three to pull away from an elite field as the crowd roared!  She finished with a phenomenal school-record time of 2:17. 83, to become a regional champion and qualify for the state meet!  She broke the legendary Celeste (Susnis) Robinson’s previous school-record mark of 2:20.0.  Cavinder was seeded 5th.  Sr. Shot putter Alyssa Eger had another outstanding meet, setting a new personal record (PR) of 37′-11 1/2″, to garner a huge 5th place, scoring big points for the Kougars.  The 4×400 relay team of Julianna Colon, Jungels, versatile sr. Leah Gouwens and Cavinder ran nearly 5 seconds faster than at sectional, taking 5th in 4:08.21, with the first three runners running very well, and Cavinder going from 8th to 4th on her 59 second anchor leg!  KV was seeded 4th, West Side from Heat 1 ran some 18 seconds faster than their seed time, to take 2nd overall.  It was another excellent run from this foursome.  Seeded 9th, sr. discus star Jazmyne Mehay placed 8th, with a toss of 102′-10″, an excellent way for Mehay to end her fine career.  A huge highlight for KV was jr. three-sport superstar sprinter Rae Walther.  Seeded FOURTEENTH in the 200, she blasted around the curve and through the finish in her trial to make the finals in a then PR time of 26.96.  In the finals she placed 8th with a stellar new PR time of 26.77, over a second faster than she ran at sectional, a remarkable achievement!  Top 8 score, and Top 3 advance to the state meet at the regional meet.  Also participating at regional for the 6x defending sectional champions were: Cavinder and Walther-both with times of 13.21 in the 100, finishing way above their projected seeds; Colon-12th in the 400 with an excellent PR time of 61.51; the 3200 relay team of L. Gouwens (2:35 lead-off leg), Abby Homrich, Colon and Allie Tokarz-13th in 11:07.08, seeded 15th; the 400 relay team of Nan Fox, Cavinder, Erin Gouwens and Walther (current KV Athlete of the Week)-15th in a fine time of 52.90, a huge SB time;  “Eee” Gouwens-a 2x Regional Qualifier as a sr., also competed in the pole vault, as she also concludes her stellar career.  While tough to say good-bye to the seniors whose careers have ended at regional, the focus should be on the many, many things they have done for this program with their talent, work ethic and leadership!  Thank you to all seniors, you will be sorely missed and best wishes to Jungels and Cavinder at the state meet at IU-Bloomington, next Friday.  Head Coach Lane K. Lewallen, Assistants David Veldman and Page Walczak, and Volunteer Assistants Joli Jungels and Ally Rockley could not be prouder of this team for all they have added to the legacy that is KV Girls’ Track and Field!
