Girls Track Sectional ChampsTonight at Fred Jones Field, on another cold, windy evening, KV’s Lady Kougars won their 6th straight Kankakee Valley Sectional track and field team championship with 143.60 points over the 15 team field.  Currently ranked 4th in the area, KV needed this good of an effort as area #10 Morgan Twp. was a very strong 2nd with 93.37 pts.  Sr. sensation Jenna Jungels was her usual amazing self, adding four more sectional event titles to her phenomenal career resume.  She dominated the long jump at 18′-2″, the 100 hurdles in 16.19 and the 300 hurdles in 46.91.  She also ran another great leg of the 4×400 winner, as did Julianna Colon, Leah Gowens and Cat Cavinder, this quartet winning in 4:13.02.  Top three places advance to the Chesterton Regional.  Jr. sprinter Rae Walther had a gigantic night, winning both the 100 and 200 in 13.60 and 28.08 into the north headwind, exceeding her seeds in both events.  She then anchored her 400 relay team to a strong 2nd place, also qualifying for regional in that event.  Sr. thrower Alyssa Eger, showing why she is one of the top throwers in the area, uncorked a mammoth personal record toss of 37′-8 1/2″ to win that event, and 10 more huge points for KV.  Cavinder blasted to 1st in the 800 in an excellent time of 2:23.73, and also qualified for the regional in the 100 (13.70) and 400 relay (53.56), taking 2nd in those events.  Walther and Cavinder going 1-2 in the 100 gave KV 18 very important points.  Joining Cavinder and Walther on the 400 relay team was Erin Gouwens and lead-off runner Natalie Fox.  E. Gouwens and Fox make their first trip to regional and “Eee” is a 2x qualifier, having toughed out a 3rd place in the pole vault, going 8′-0″.  Also making a return trip to regional will be discus ace sr. Jazmyne Mehay who was a very strong 2nd with a fine toss of 103′-8″. Colon, the gutsy one, also qualified for the regional as an individual with her fine 2nd place run in the 400 with a time of 62.89. Also scoring important points for KV were the following: the 4×800 relay team of L. Gouwens (who ran another terrific lead-off leg)-Abby Homrich-Allie Tokarz and Colon-4th in 10:47.63; L. Gouwens-tied for 7th in the pole vault; Kirsten Hentschel-an important-5th in the discus at 93′-2″; Kara Strong ran tough for 8th in the 400 from the 3rd heat in 66.82;  Sarah Martin gutted out two 8th places in the hurdles, especially impressive was her 52.65 in the 300’s out of the 2nd heat, while battling shin splints;  Madi Fisher long jumped an excellent PR leap of 15′-7 1/2″ to place 7th, well above her projected seed; Tokarz battled another very strong distance field and was 7th in the 1600 and a very strong 4th in the 3200 in a fine time of 12:33. 97, just off her PR.  Emma Fase took an important 5th place in the shot with a toss of 30′-7 3/4″.  KV scored 26 gigantic points in the throws as Asst.
