Boys Middle School Track, Boys Varsity Track · Boys’ track and field takes 3


Boys’ track and field triumphed over a field of three on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at home, narrowly defeating Wheeler 95-92.  Covenant Christian scored 32 points, Gary 21st Century Academy, 20.  KV boys are 19-11 on the year with one NCC double dual meet to go before the post season.

 

KV scored nearly 1/2 of the total score in field events.  KV pole vaulters swept all 5 places in the event (Schoonveld, Nowak, Gentz, Peterson, and Baggerly).  Chad Hill added a 2nd place in long jump (18′ 4″) and 3rd in high jump (5′ 4″).  Darin Kapella added two 2nd places in the discus (135′ 5″ season best) and shot put (42′ 1″ personal best).

The 3200m relay squad of Hill, Bryce Niewoehner, Peterson, and Ryder Smith) posted a season best time of 9:05.7 for 2nd place.  Gavin Tillema, in his first run at the 110m hurdles in three weeks, took the event in 16.2.

Senior Oscar Gutierrez stepped up his performance on senior night with two season bests in the 100m (11.4) and 200m (23.5), both good for 2nd place.  Gutierrez anchored the 400m relay to victory, with the efforts of Gavin Tillema, Kyle Kamminga, and Jacob Stansberry (48.1).

Other top performances include

Danny Rockley — 2nd in the 1600m (4:53.8, season best)

Trevor Conley and Bryce Niewoehner — 2nd and 3rd in the 3200m (10:48.2 and 10:57.0, personal bests).

Kyle Kamminga — 3rd in his debut in the 300m hurdles (47.3).

KV travels to Highland on Thursday, May 5, 2016 to compete with Highland and Lowell.
