With improvement and gaining experience the focus, KV’s Lady Kougars did just that at Saturday’s McCutcheon Maverick Stampede. Despite an 8th place team finish with 206 points, KV ran WAY better than a week earlier, on a much more difficult course, facing very strong teams. Three runners: Crystal Benitez, Kaila Moskalick and Allison Schultheis, actually ran faster times on the challenging course than a week earlier. Soph. Benitez was again KV’s #1 runner, placing 32nd in a fine time of 24:31, in just her second varsity cross country race. Moskalick had her best run of the early season, taking 39th in 25:34. Leah Gouwens, also a varsity volleyball star, showed extreme athleticism in her first ever varsity cross race, taking 44th in a time of 25:52. Breanna Rose, who continues to get stronger every race, also new to cross, was 50th in 27:50, with jr. leader Schultheis, just months after knee surgery, running a very solid time of 28:25, good for 52nd place. Ally Schumacher-56th in 30:26 and Kailee VanNieulande-57th in 31:14, rounded out the 7 runners for KV. Talented freshman, Hazel Veldman, rested her knee again this meet, and looks to possible make her varsity debut this upcoming week. While the coaches and runners look forward to a meet where all 8 runners are healthy and fit, that will happen as they continue to focus on getting better and the details involved with that process. Excellent meet, ladies!
