The KVHS Lady Kougar Cross Country team opened their season today at the Monon Town Park, which hosted the North White Invite. KV will no longer run in this meet in the future, but they have greatly enjoyed their many years of running in this meet. This meet had everything: humidity due to a late start, runners battling injuries and nerves, and even a fallen teammate, Ally Schumacher, who thankfully, is okay. A 2014 regional qualifier, jr. Schumacher was moving along well before collapsing near the two mile mark, having stepped wrong on a root or the like. Always courageous, she was recovering nicely by the boys’ varsity race. (Speaking of KV’s boys, they had an excellent meet, taking 2nd as a team behind Bryce Niewoehner’s 7th and Trevor Conley’s 9th place for Coach Tim Adams.) While her teammates were understandably concerned, she encouraged them to carry on, as they ran by. In their first ever varsity cross country races, sophomore Crystal Benitez and jr. Breanna Rose then led the way. Benitez finished in 41st place with a time of 25:29, way faster than her goal. Rose, also battling a bad back, was strong throughout, finishing in 54th place with a time of 27:06. Both runners look to knock minutes off these times before they are finished with the season. Sr. Kaila Moskalick was 58th in 27:27, and Allison Schultheis’s rehab remains on track, as she finished the race in 65th place with a time of 28:55, also faster than her pre-race goal. Kailee VanNieulande was KV’s 5th runner today, placing 69th, in 30:00. Fr. Hazel Veldman was resting a sore knee and sr. Leah Gouwens was with her volleyball team for this meet. They were 10th as a team at the North White Invite today with 243 points, and return to action next Sat. at the McCutcheon Stampede Invite.
